Merino Underwear - Areas of Use
Merino Ski Underwear
Why is merino underwear particularly suitable for skiing or freeriding? Simply because it still provides warmth even when damp from sweat.
Merino wool effortlessly handles the constant changes between strenuous descents and passive phases by consistently retaining warmth.
Synthetic ski underwear, on the other hand, does the exact opposite while waiting in the lift line and riding the chairlift; it creates strong evaporative cooling. The result is shivering and cooling muscles.

Not so with ski underwear made from merino wool. It can absorb up to 1/3 of its own weight in moisture while simultaneously storing warmth. This reduces the risk of colds and keeps muscles warm, which in turn minimizes the risk of injury.
Another positive side effect is that with a merino base layer, you don't have to worry about sweat odors during lunch at the ski hut or après-ski, as these are neutralized in the wool fibers.
Functional underwear made from merino wool also offers many advantages for ski tours or snowshoeing. Hardly any winter sport offers greater temperature contrasts. A long, strenuous ascent, where sunny and wind-protected sections alternate with exposed and windy conditions, as well as varying degrees of steepness and an abrupt stop at the summit, demand the highest level of temperature flexibility.
This is precisely the greatest strength of the crimped natural fiber, as its climate range is unparalleled. Wool protects against overheating during the ascent due to the moisture stored in the fiber core and does not get cold even after reaching the summit and setting down the backpack.
So you can save yourself the hectic changing in icy winds and instead enjoy the view.

Merino Outdoor Underwear
For day hikes, the weather can be calculated well, and choosing the right equipment is easy.
However, it's different for multi-day hut tours or trekking tours. Here, the question quickly arises as to what the right clothing is and how to reduce weight and packing volume as much as possible.
For anyone who has tried merino on multi-day tours, the answer is quickly found.
What could be better for this question than a shirt that covers a huge temperature range and also lasts for several days without washing?
Exactly – a backpack full of spare clothes or annoying washing on the go is a thing of the past.

If you've already acquired a taste for saving weight, then there's good news, because that wasn't all:
Merino functional clothing not only helps you save on spare clothes, but also reduces the burden of drinks in your backpack.
What synthetic underwear constantly evaporates outwards for cooling must also be constantly rehydrated to avoid dehydration.
Wool, on the other hand, is smarter, as it buffers sweat and thereby regulates body temperature. Evaporation is much slower, and the body has to sweat less to cool down.
This reduces the need for fluids and consequently, less water has to be carried.

Merino Functional Underwear for Fitness
In winter sports or hiking, merino underwear is a well-known and established item. In the fitness and running sector, however, synthetic fibers still dominate. But why is that?
The widespread cliché that wool is only for winter misunderstands the enormous range of comfortable climate that the natural fiber covers.
Even for high demands on elasticity and breathability, there is a variety of products with Merino blended fabrics, as well as innovative processing techniques (e.g. seamless circular knitting).
Whether for running or in the gym, there is an alternative with a natural climate and integrated odor neutralization.

Merino Everyday Wear
It all starts with sports. But those who love merino for hiking will quickly reach a point where they wonder why they shouldn't wear this comfortable clothing in everyday life too.
No wonder, because once you've gotten used to this natural comfort, it's hard to take a step back.
Be it the merino undershirt under a suit or the casual merino shirt when traveling. In our shop, you'll find plenty of sportswear that is only too happy to be repurposed for everyday use and has great potential to become your next favorite piece of clothing.
Merino Expedition Underwear
By expedition, we mean all outdoor activities where the choice of appropriate clothing is essential for survival.
Therefore, there is no room for compromise in this category.
With the companies Aclima and Woolpower, we have two experienced merino specialists on board who cover the entire portfolio of highly functional thermal underwear and extremely warm socks, with special solutions such as overalls, double-walled knitted constructions, as well as balaclavas and other accessories for extreme weather conditions.

Why merino underwear is indispensable for expeditions and how broad the spectrum of applications is, you can find out here:
Range of application:
- Winter trekking with a tent
- Long-distance hiking with skis or snowshoes and a pulka (sled)
- Husky tours
- Multi-day high-altitude ski tours
- High-altitude mountaineering
Functional superiority:
Both for performance and for regulating body temperature, functional underwear plays a crucial role as it is in direct contact with the skin. A prolonged stay outdoors at double-digit sub-zero temperatures or strong winds can quickly become dangerous if hypothermia occurs. However, it is not only about pure thermal performance, but also about balanced moisture management.
Thermal underwear made from merino wool combines maximum thermal efficiency with protection against overheating during the active phase. Sweat moisture does not lead to increased evaporative cooling as with synthetic fabrics. Wool thus regulates body temperature and minimizes the risk of cooling down.
Especially in high-altitude mountaineering, another important aspect comes into play. Wool extracts significantly less fluid from the body than synthetic fibers, which can force dehydration through permanent evaporation and increase susceptibility to altitude sickness.
Anyone who has slept in a tent at sub-zero temperatures also knows how important heat radiation is when there is no more body heat. Furthermore, the last thing you want in this situation is to change your underwear because the smell is no longer bearable.
Merino functional underwear can simply be left on day and night, day after day, and if necessary, for more than 1 week. No changing is necessary.
Washing and drying underwear at sub-zero temperatures is simply impossible. The use of synthetic fiber underwear is not only functionally nonsensical, but would also unnecessarily burden luggage with numerous changes of clothes.
